Advanced GD Project 2: Branding an Emotion

INSTRUCTOR REFLECTION

This is the project I have run the longest in this course and the one I am least likely to change. The constraint is severe enough to be genuinely difficult and open enough to reward interpretation. The consistent challenge is abstraction: students who design a brand for "joy" and produce yellow circles and bouncy type have illustrated the emotion rather than designed for it. The students whose work surprises me are the ones who find an unexpected angle — who ask what joy costs, or what joy excludes, or what joy looks like at its most specific rather than its most universal — and build a visual system from that question. The research paper is not decoration. The visual decisions should be unintelligible without it.
