Graphic Design 1

Graphic Design 1 is a course that simultaneously serves as a course that applies to the general education core under art, and it is the foundational course for the graphic design major and minor.

About

This foundational course introduces students to the exciting world of graphic design. Through hands-on projects and theoretical exploration, students will develop a strong understanding of fundamental design principles and elements, effective layout strategies, and typographic hierarchies. The course will also provide a comprehensive introduction to industry-standard software, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, equipping students with the essential technical skills needed to translate creative ideas into effective visual communication. No prior art or design experience is required.

This course has undergone many iterations since its inception in 2015 (and 2023 at Pacific University). The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the foundational skills of graphic design, including visual language, visual literacy, and the elements & principles of design. Simultaneously, students are introduced to design thinking, creative problem-solving, and design theory. They are also introduced to the three software programs: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Because this course is a mix of design majors and minors, as well as students who take it as a general education (core) elective with little to no previous art experience, it is necessary to balance the students' experiences and expectations.

The projects below have  changed throughout the years, in order to adapt to the changing needs and skills of each class of students. Some projects have been removed and replaced, while others have undergone various iterations of modifications.
